Doris Slate-Greene Obituary

Doris Arlene Winkel Slate-Greene was born on March 10, 1933 in Glen Elder, Kansas to Lawrence and Irene Hummel Winkel. She passed away on January 3rd, 2023 at the age of 89.

Doris was married to Vivian (Babe) Slate on July 7, 1951. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1992, after over 40 years together. To this union were born 4 sons and 3 daughters. On December 16, 2002, Doris was united in marriage to Norman Greene. They enjoyed 20 years of marriage.

Our beloved Doris is remembered for her kind and gentle heart. A devoted wife, mother and homemaker, her homemade pies, breads and cinnamon rolls always brought a smile. Her humble and grateful demeanor left us all feeling deeply cared for in her presence. She always enjoyed a quiet ride through the country with Norman with the mule and buggy. She was an avid reader and especially committed to her spiritual side. Her devout Catholic faith shone through her unconditional love for everyone she met. She will be deeply missed.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Babe, son-in-law Erick Baird, daughter-in-law Sue Slate, sister and brother-in-law Jean and Bud Boden, brother Lawrence Winkel Jr., and brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Patti Winkel.

Surviving are her husband Norman and her seven children—Daniel (and Nyla) Slate, Wichita; Rosanna (and Jim) Foster, Somerset, Kentucky; Jane (and Gary) Gordanier, League City, Texas; Roy Slate, Billings, Montana; Tammy (and Fred) Eilert, Mankato; John Slate, Jewell; and Curtis (and Lori) Slate, Jewell—12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, as well as 4 step-children, 6 step-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister Mary Jane (and Rick) Gamber, Olathe; sister-in-law Maxine Winkel, Cawker City; and Brother Karl (and Karen) Winkel, Glen Elder; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends who mourn her passing.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 6th, 5-7pm, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, with rosary to follow.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saturday, January 7th, 11:00am, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Mankato with Fr. Andrew Rockers Officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Solomon Valley Hospice or to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
